In a stunning display of skill and determination, Aryna Sabalenka clinched her 22nd career title at the Brisbane International on Sunday, triumphing over Marta Kostyuk with a score of 6-4, 6-3 in just 78 minutes at the Pat Rafter Arena. Sporting the colors of green and gold, Sabalenka successfully defended her title, marking her second consecutive victory at this tournament and her fifth overall in Australia.
This latest win propels Sabalenka past fellow competitor Victoria Azarenka, securing her position as the player with the third-most WTA Tour titles among active players, trailing only tennis legends Venus Williams and Iga Swiatek. Remarkably, throughout the entire week of competition, Sabalenka did not drop a single set, demonstrating her dominance even against a spirited effort from Kostyuk in the final.
During the trophy presentation, Sabalenka graciously acknowledged her opponent, stating, "I want to start by congratulating Marta and her team on an incredible start to the season. I look forward to facing each other in many more finals to showcase our talents on the court."
Both competitors showcased exceptional tennis skills throughout the tournament. Sabalenka overcame formidable opponents, including Madison Keys and Karolina Muchova, before claiming victory over Kostyuk. On the other hand, Kostyuk enjoyed one of her strongest performances yet, achieving three impressive victories over Top 10 ranked players Amanda Anisimova, Mirra Andreeva, and Jessica Pegula, although she ultimately fell short in the championship match.
Despite her impressive run, Kostyuk's quest for her first title since 2023 and her first at a level above WTA 250 fell short as Sabalenka seized the opportunity early in the match. Sabalenka began strongly, holding serve and securing an early break to take a 2-0 lead after converting her fourth break point. After extending her lead to 3-0, Kostyuk rallied back, winning three consecutive games to tie the set at 3-all.
However, the tension of the match culminated in the 10th game, when a slight opening from Kostyuk was all Sabalenka needed. The World No. 1 capitalized on this chance to break once more, sealing the first set while winning every single one of her first-serve points.
As the second set unfolded, it became clear why Sabalenka is regarded as one of the top frontrunners in women's tennis. She maintained her momentum by holding serve, breaking again to establish a 2-0 lead, and quickly extending her advantage to 3-0. This time, there was no comeback from Kostyuk. Sabalenka showcased her finesse with a well-executed drop shot followed by a cross-court forehand winner, comfortably sealing her victory a few games later.
Though she faced a few challenges, Sabalenka still won an impressive 81% of her first-serve points, confronting only three break points during the match and conceding just one. She successfully converted three out of eight break opportunities that came her way.
With her first title of 2026 in hand, Sabalenka shifts her focus to the Australian Open, where she is set to defend her status as the runner-up after losing to Madison Keys in last year’s finals. She will enter the tournament as the No. 1 seed, aiming for her third title in Melbourne.
For Kostyuk, despite the disappointing finish, the week provided a wealth of encouragement. She is expected to return to the Top 20 in the PIF WTA Rankings on Monday, positioning herself for a more prosperous run in the upcoming Australian Open compared to her early exit in the previous year, where she was eliminated in the third round by Paula Badosa.
