Auston Matthews Breaks Goals Record with Mats Sundin's Special Tribute (2026)

Mats Sundin's journey from Sweden to Toronto to celebrate Auston Matthews’ remarkable achievement as the Maple Leafs’ all-time leading goal scorer was a deeply emotional moment for the team’s current captain.

Matthews surpassed Sundin’s long-standing record by netting two goals against the New York Islanders on Saturday, followed by another goal witnessed live by Sundin during the Maple Leafs' 4-1 victory over the reigning Stanley Cup champions, the Florida Panthers, at Scotiabank Arena on Tuesday night.

During a heartfelt pre-game ceremony, Sundin took the time to honor Matthews, coinciding with a tribute to the recently departed Bob Pulford, a beloved four-time Stanley Cup champion with the Maple Leafs, who passed away at the age of 89.

"All of it means a lot," expressed the 28-year-old Matthews, reflecting on the significance of wearing the Maple Leafs jersey. “It’s incredibly special. It’s an absolute honor to represent this team. Having Mats here and acknowledging the legacy of so many players who have worn this jersey before me is truly meaningful, and I’m very grateful for that.”

Sundin, a Hockey Hall of Famer, scored 420 goals over 981 games with the Maple Leafs, while Matthews achieved his 422nd goal in just 665 appearances.

“I thought it might take a few more years for someone to break my record, but he’s clearly a phenomenal goal scorer,” Sundin said with a grin. "Records are meant to be broken, and what a privilege it is for Maple Leafs fans to witness a superstar like Auston, who is not only one of the league’s top players but also an exceptional individual.

“He’s an excellent leader and handles the intense scrutiny of playing in Toronto with such poise. I couldn’t be happier for him.”

Toronto’s fourth-line center Scott Laughton, who played a crucial role during the final moments of the game, shared his excitement about meeting legends like Sundin, having grown up as a Maple Leafs fan.

“It’s amazing to see these alumni on the ice and to be around them,” Laughton remarked. “When you see figures like Darcy (Tucker), it highlights what makes this organization so special.”

Facing off against the defending champions, this matchup marked the Panthers’ first return to Toronto since they decisively eliminated the Maple Leafs with a 6-1 victory in Game 7 of the playoffs on May 18.

The Maple Leafs have now won both encounters against the Panthers this season.

"Rivalries develop when you face these teams in the playoffs, and it creates a different level of intensity," commented Toronto head coach Craig Berube. "Games against teams like Florida are always going to be fierce, especially after last year’s playoffs. We know we need to match their physical play throughout the game."

In a surprising twist, super-pest Brad Marchand did not participate in the third period of the game, as he was held out for what was described as "precautionary reasons," despite appearing to move without any issues post-game.

Earlier that day, Marchand disclosed that he had contemplated signing with the Maple Leafs as a free agent during the previous summer.

"It came down to a choice between Florida and Toronto. I honestly didn’t think re-signing with Florida would even be an option for me," he revealed.
