Are you tired of tossing and turning at night, struggling to get a good night's sleep? Well, you're not alone! Many people are surprised to learn that the key to a better night's sleep might be hidden in the colors and palette of their bedroom. Experts agree that a surprising bedroom palette can make all the difference in helping you drift off into a peaceful slumber. But here's where it gets controversial... While some might argue that bold and vibrant colors can create a stimulating atmosphere, experts suggest that softer, neutral palettes can actually promote a more calming and relaxing environment. So, let's dive into the world of bedroom design and explore the case for neutral bedrooms and how they can contribute to a better night's sleep. But first, let's take a look at some of the experts who are making a concerted effort to bring peace, serenity, and quiet to the bedrooms they create. One such expert is Livvi DiCicco, a certified sleep science coach at Sleepopolis. According to DiCicco, "Certain colors can elicit certain psychological responses. Softer, neutral palettes might be better for a more calming atmosphere." She's not the only one with this belief; designers are also making a concerted effort to bring peace, serenity, and quiet to the bedrooms they create. But neutral doesn't have to mean drab. Most designers (even DiCicco, a personal fan of a louder, more charismatic palette) wouldn't suggest settling for a boring beige bedroom that lacks dimension and personality. Instead, they encourage clients to create bedrooms that are not overstimulating in order to help their quest for a better night's sleep. "An energized mood may not be the best for winding down for the night," DiCicco adds. Now, let's take a look at some designers who are making a case for neutral bedrooms. While plenty of designers prefer maximalism and color in all rooms (including the bedroom), just as many fall into the opposite camp. One such pro is Jack Simpson, the founder and creative director of London-based Nomad Developments, who aims to create bedrooms that feel relaxed and comfortable from the moment you step inside. "While other rooms can maintain a calming atmosphere, their richer, color-drenched schemes offer moments of visual drama and play, but the bedroom is intentionally kept softer to emphasize a tranquil feel," he adds. That strategy is generally well-received by anyone looking to get a good night's sleep. There are certainly other elements you can incorporate to make the vibe even cozier—touchably soft textures, easy-on-the-eyes art, and minimal patterns, to name a few—but the most obvious indicator of a room's aesthetic is the palette, which is why designers and sleep experts (and myself) are all for a warm, welcoming color scheme. Another designer known for her calming, quiet palettes is Becky Shea, and she's a massive proponent of keeping the bedroom drama-free. "In a home we completed in Bridgehampton, New York, we used a palette of light tones to speak to the beach setting and the warmth and tranquility of the dune grasses, as well as the movement of the sand they emulate," she explains. Anyone worried that going all-neutral may lead to the "beige effect" of boring rooms that don't really move you, fear not; Shea has a solution that the most clever designers always employ. "We love to layer a space, even when it’s bathed in neutrals, by introducing depth through thoughtful combinations of texture." Simpson and Shea aren't alone in their thinking. Matthew Leverone, founder and principal at his namesake firm, is also into crafting neutral bedrooms, as long as they're not boring. He tends to add a myriad of visual interest to keep the space feeling unique. "We kept the room's color palette restrained; to counterbalance this, we introduced interesting furniture and lighting pieces, such as the architectural platform bed and playful Pierre Yovanovitch pendants," he adds. He also made sure to add plenty of materials to give the space more of a sense of texture. "The heavily textured headboard and the custom rug with a deep, tactile swirl pattern add additional interest while preserving a calm and peaceful experience." Remember, if you're not someone who naturally leans toward bright colors and layered patterns, you have options. Keep the palette quiet, but make it feel lived-in by incorporating such materials as velvet, linen, and even shearling. You're sure to benefit from the beautiful design, whether you're closing your eyes for the day or not. So, are you ready to transform your bedroom into a sanctuary of peace and tranquility?
