The play, titled 'The Marian Hotel', delves into the harrowing legacy of mother and baby homes, a dark chapter in Ireland's history. Written by Caitriona Cunningham, a brave Derry woman and survivor of one such institution, it brings to life the stories of young women who were forced to endure unimaginable circumstances. In 1979, at just 19 years old, Caitriona herself was placed in Marianvale, a mother and baby institution run by the Good Shepherd Sisters near Newry, County Down. The play, set in the institution she endured, follows the character of Kitty as she grapples with the devastating reality of being young, pregnant, and forced to give up her child. This powerful narrative not only sheds light on the tragic experiences of these women but also serves as a reminder of the importance of addressing and learning from our past mistakes.
